A new video from the night of the deadly fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans Montana has been released, with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reporting that the Sion Public Prosecutor's Office has presented it as visual material, clearly showing how the fire broke out.
In the video, 24-year-old waitress Sian Panine is seen holding two champagne bottles with fireworks attached to them. The woman sits on her colleague's shoulders as sparks from the fireworks hit the highly flammable soundproofing foam panels on the ceiling. Seconds later, one of the panels catches fire. According to initial reports, the restaurant's owners, the Moretti couple, claimed the idea for the fireworks display came from the waiters, but a witness said Jessica Moretti personally gave the order for the action. The helmet Panine wore during the demonstration reportedly severely restricted her field of vision, and according to her parents, the seasonal worker had received no fire safety training.
“I panicked when I saw the flames,” she said later. Owner Jacques Moretti expressed his grief at the sentencing hearing: “No parent should have to go through this. This is a catastrophe. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.” His wife, Jessica, added with tears in her eyes: “What these mothers are going through is indescribable. No one should have to go through this. We will never shirk our responsibilities.”
Asked about her behavior on the night of the fire, the 40-year-old said: “I wanted to call the fire department right away. I thought that once the place was evacuated, we could go back inside. I didn’t use a fire extinguisher because I panicked. My priority was to raise the alarm.” She added that she had wanted to hug people and help, but didn’t realize the seriousness of the situation until later. The tragic event has sparked strong reactions and investigations are ongoing to determine responsibility for the fire outbreak and its consequences.
