Tragedy has rocked the prestigious Volta a Portugal race, with 19-year-old British cyclist Finlay Tarling killed during Friday's stage in Portugal. The exact circumstances of the accident are still under investigation, with Portuguese and French media reporting that Tarling was allegedly hit by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on the section of the race.

Following the serious incident, the race was stopped a few kilometres from the finish and the podium ceremony was cancelled. The 19-year-old's body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Viana do Castelo. Tarling was part of the NSN Development Team and was considered one of Britain's most promising young cyclists. He had won third place in the U23 individual time trial at the British National Championships this summer.


His team announced the athlete's death with sadness, describing him as a much-loved member of the team, but above all as a son, brother and friend. Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also expressed his condolences to the young man's family and team, saying that the news of his death had deeply shocked him.
