A family tragedy has shaken Izmir, where a 56-year-old woman and her 4-year-old grandson lost their lives in a fire that engulfed their apartment.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the Cisigli area. According to preliminary data, Rezan Korkmaz initially managed to get his other nephew, 2-year-old Mert, out of the apartment, but then returned to the burning house to save 4-year-old Yigit.

Both were found dead by firefighters. The grandmother's body was found on top of the child's, suggesting that she tried to shield him from the flames with her body.

The 59-year-old grandfather, Bayram Korkmaz, managed to escape by jumping out of the window. He suffered burns to his hands and back and was taken to the apartment after being treated at the hospital. 4-year-old Yigit was due to celebrate his birthday on August 23. The bodies of the grandmother and grandson were handed over to their families after autopsies were completed. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
