The FIFA 2026 World Cup continues to generate much debate, partly due to the heavy involvement of Donald Trump, with the US president having been present at almost every stage since his country, along with Canada and Mexico, won the right to host the event. What also caused a lot of controversy was the award that FIFA gave to Donald Trump, the FIFA Peace Prize, a detail that was not well received, even by FIFA members themselves, who have recently hinted at or are considering drastic measures such as a boycott.
In an interview with "Sky News", Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, did not back down, but emphasized that Trump deserved such an award: "Objectively, he deserves it. Whatever we can do to contribute to peace, we should do it. In fact, we had been thinking for a long time about doing something, to reward those who contribute to peace.", Infantino said.
The FIFA head then focused on the voices against, on members who are even considering a boycott due to the policies pursued by President Trump's administration: "In our divided world, in our aggressive world, we need opportunities where people can come together, gather around passion", Infantino said.
In the end, the FIFA president left open the possibility that Russia, and Russian footballers, could return with full rights, as their country was penalized the moment Russia began to invade Ukraine: "This ban has achieved nothing, it has only created more frustration and hatred. It would be beneficial if Russian girls and boys could return to play football in other parts of Europe," the FIFA president concluded.
