US President Donald Trump announced the nomination of James McDonald as a candidate for the position of federal attorney for the Southern District of New York, one of the most important positions in the American justice system.
The federal prosecutor's office in Manhattan is considered among the most powerful in the country, having broad powers in investigating financial crimes, corruption, terrorism and high-profile cases.
This office also enjoys a considerable degree of independence from the US Department of Justice, compared to other federal prosecutors' offices.
"I am confident that Jamie will achieve significant results for our country as the next U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York," Trump wrote in a post on the Truth Social platform, praising McDonald's reputation in the legal community and law enforcement.
If his nomination is approved by the U.S. Senate, McDonald will replace Jay Clayton.
According to Trump's announcement, Clayton has been selected for the position of Director of National Intelligence, following the departure of Tulsi Gabbard.
The appointment comes at a time when the US administration is making changes to some of the key security and justice positions, while the focus remains on the fight against financial crime, corruption and threats to national security.
