US President Donald Trump today ruled out the possibility of escalating the situation regarding Cuba, while calling the prosecution of former Cuban President Raul Castro by the US justice system a "very important moment".

"There will be no escalation. I don't think it's necessary. This country is being destroyed," Trump told reporters after returning from Connecticut.

Referring to the criminal prosecution filed in the United States against 94-year-old Raul Castro, who had succeeded his brother Fidel as leader of Cuba, Trump said that "it is a very important moment ... not only for Cuban-Americans, but also for people who came from Cuba, who want to go back to Cuba and see their families."

Raul Castro is accused of shooting down two planes carrying Cuban immigrants in 1996 by a Cuban air force fighter jet. At the time, he was Cuba's defense minister.
