US President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday that Iran would be “wiped off the map” if Tehran orchestrated his assassination, responding to threats made by an Iranian general. “I have given very clear orders. If anything happens, they will be wiped off the face of the earth,” Trump said during an interview with the News Nation television network, broadcast on Tuesday.
His statement came after Iranian General Abolfazl Shekarchi warned that the US president would be killed if Washington attacked Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. "Trump knows that if a hand is raised against our leader, we will not cut off that hand. These are not empty words," Shekarchi told Iranian state media. Trump has repeatedly threatened to order military intervention against Iran, saying he aims to end the crackdown on mass protests that erupted on December 28.
Meanwhile, several voices in the Iranian diaspora, including Shirin Ebadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, have called for “targeted” action by Washington against the Iranian leadership, particularly Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The latest threats are not the first from Trump. Shortly after his return to the White House a year ago, he declared that he would “destroy” Iran if Tehran launched any attack on his life.
