Donald Trump threatened on Monday to raise tariffs on Mexican products by 5% if Mexico does not ensure that more water reaches the state of Texas "immediately" under a 1944 bilateral agreement on water resources.
"Mexico continues to violate our water agreement," the Republican US president said via Truth Social, demanding that the neighboring country ensure that 250 million cubic meters of water reach his country by the end of this year and larger amounts thereafter, and stating that, otherwise, additional tariffs of 5% will be imposed on Mexican products imported into his country.
"So far, Mexico has not fulfilled" its obligations, he complained.
Under the agreement, Mexico is obligated to allow large amounts of water to flow into the United States from the Rio Grande through a network of dams and reservoirs.
Water shortages are affecting both farmers and ranchers in the state of Texas, the US president insisted.
The Mexican government argues that the drought is causing a worsening problem with water resources.
