The Turkish Armed Forces conducted a controlled explosion of a US military ship after high security risks were identified. The autonomous ship, AEGIR W, manufactured by US defense company Sierra Nevada Corporation, was found abandoned on a beach in the Yuçeler district of the Unye region near the Black Sea coast on Friday afternoon. Passersby who spotted the object immediately notified authorities, who cordoned off the area and imposed strict security measures.
The next day, experts from the Istanbul SAS Command inspected the ship's technology and confirmed that the equipment remained active and dangerous due to the explosive charge. The ship was then towed to a safe distance of four kilometers from the coast and neutralized with a controlled explosion, while the residents of the area were conditionally evacuated.
According to specifications, AEGIR W is 10 meters long, has a range of up to 900 kilometers, develops speeds of over 25 knots and can carry a payload of 300 kilograms. Its system allows for fully autonomous navigation or remote control by the operator.
Turkish authorities stressed that the decision to neutralize the ship was necessary to avoid any potential danger to the local population and infrastructure.
