Albanian Alket Rizai, known in Greece for his spectacular prison escapes and as a former associate of the much-wanted Vasilis Paleokostas, has been involved in a shooting incident at a beach bar in Anavyssos, Athens. The incident has alarmed Greek authorities, as Rizai was out of prison on leave and was due to return to Domokos Prison.
According to the information released, the police were notified at around 05:15 in the morning of gunshots in the area. When officers arrived at the scene, they did not find the people involved, but they found two shell casings and blood stains.
Later, police were informed by the Kalives Health Center that two people had been sent for medical attention. They were a 20-year-old Greek man who had a glass fragment wound to his ankle, and a 41-year-old Pakistani man who had a bullet wound to his calf. Both turned out to be employees of the business.
Initially, their testimonies and those of the bar owner were different, while later the police reconstructed part of the dynamics of the event through film footage.
According to the version being investigated, at a moment when most of the customers had left the bar, the owner turned down the music. Rizai, who was there with two other people, went out into the parking lot and played loud music from his vehicle.
The business owner came outside and asked him to keep his voice down, as he was afraid the noise would bring the police into action. The situation then escalated into a conflict, involving other people who left the premises.
During the altercation, Rizai allegedly pulled out a gun and fired into the air. An Afghan national who came out of the bar, who is suspected of working as a security guard, then opened fire. The bullets ricocheted off the bar and injured two employees.
After the incident, Alket Rizai and the two people accompanying him left by car, while the Afghan citizen also left the scene and is wanted.
Meanwhile, the owner of the bar has been arrested for giving false testimony regarding the incident.
The case has also put the Greek police in motion for another reason: Alket Rizai is due to report to Domokos Prison on Monday, after his leave expires. If he does not return on time, he risks being considered a fugitive, which has led to the mobilization of Greek authorities to find him.
