Countries around the world should reject Iran's efforts to impose control over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important shipping lanes for oil, according to a statement from the IMO, Reuters reported.
The governing council of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted a document condemning Iran's decision to create a structure aimed at controlling maritime traffic in the strait.
The IMO stated that member countries should not recognize Iran's claims to sovereignty over the waters of the Strait of Hormuz nor decisions that could impede international navigation.
Tensions rose this week after clashes between the US and Iran, including US air strikes, following Washington's accusations that Tehran was responsible for attacks on ships.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic point for global trade, as a large portion of the world's oil supplies pass through it.
Any disruption in this area could affect energy markets and maritime transport.
Iran has denied that it is trying to close the strait, saying its measures are only aimed at increasing maritime security and protecting the country's interests.
