An oil tanker suspected of being linked to Venezuela was seized in the Caribbean on Tuesday following a US military operation, announced the US Southern Command (SouthCom), the US command for Central and South America.

According to a post by SouthCom on its X platform, the operation was carried out smoothly and successfully. The tanker, named Sagitta, was placed under US control, while a video of the military operation was also released.

The arrest is the seventh in a series of intensified US campaigns to impose controls on Venezuelan oil exports amid ongoing sanctions against the government of Nicolas Maduro.

US authorities are trying to limit the circumvention of sanctions through third countries and companies, with an emphasis on maritime transport in the Caribbean, which is considered a key passage for Venezuelan oil.
