Ukraine says it has regained more territory than it lost on the front line in May, reversing the trend of net monthly gains by Russian forces.
The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, Oleksandr Syrskii, announced that the ratio of liberated territories to those lost was in favor of Kiev by about 100 square kilometers.
"The ratio of liberated and lost territories is almost 100 square kilometers in our favor," he wrote on Telegram.

According to the Ukrainian defense agency Militaryni, the net gains may have been even greater, around 120 square kilometers. The agency, citing military sources, reported that Russia took control of about 130 square kilometers during the month, but lost about 250 square kilometers.

The Washington-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) also published a similar assessment, noting that Russia advanced about 40 square kilometers during May, but lost control of about 280 square kilometers.

Authorities also announced that Ukrainian short- and medium-range drones hit about 180 targets during May, an increase of 12.7% compared to April.
