The Chinese leadership has dismissed two senior military officials, Zhang Guxia and Liu Zhenli, from their posts on the Central Military Commission, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Monday, citing the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

Zhang Guxia, who was vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and one of the most senior military figures after President Xi Jinping, had been under investigation since January. He was also a member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party.

Liu Zhenli, a member of the Central Military Commission and chief of the General Staff of this institution, has also been placed under investigation for suspicions of "serious violations of discipline and law."

The dismissals come at a time when the Chinese leadership is pursuing a broad campaign against corruption and abuses within the military.

China has parallel Communist Party and state structures in running the armed forces. The latest announcement relates to Zhang and Liu's state posts on the Central Military Commission. However, so far, the two officials have not been officially or publicly removed from their positions on the ruling Communist Party's Central Military Commission.
