More than 2 cases of Ebola, including 754 deaths, have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the start of the outbreak, according to the country's health authorities.

The organization "Doctors Without Borders" has warned that the epidemic is spreading at an "unprecedented pace", while in less than five weeks the number of confirmed cases has tripled and the number of victims has increased more than fivefold.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the true scale of the epidemic could be much larger than official estimates. The WHO has stated that the outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus could be two to four times larger than currently thought.
This variant of the virus does not yet have a specific approved vaccine or treatment, however, the first clinical trial has begun to assess the effectiveness of an antiviral medication.

Doctors Without Borders is calling for an urgent strengthening of the medical response, stressing that the epidemic has already exceeded half the number of cases recorded during the major Ebola outbreak in Congo in 2018-2020, which lasted for nearly two years.
The current outbreak was declared on May 15 in Ituri province, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a mineral-rich area where the activity of armed groups has caused insecurity and violence for years.

Ebola cases have been reported in five provinces of Congo, as well as in neighboring Uganda. However, over 90% of infections continue to be concentrated in Ituri, making the area the epicenter of the health crisis.
