Diplomatic efforts to advance the agreement between the United States and Iran appear to have encountered new obstacles, as the first planned contact in Geneva after the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the parties has been postponed.

According to reports from the Lebanese network Al Mayadeen, considered close to Hezbollah, the Iranian negotiating delegation canceled its trip to Geneva at the last moment due to recent developments in southern Lebanon.

Sources quoted by Lebanese media report that the Iranian delegation was ready to leave for the first round of negotiations, which was expected to last 60 days, but decided to suspend the trip, arguing that the ongoing Israeli military operations on Lebanese territory constitute a factor that directly affects the diplomatic process.

According to the same sources, Iran had previously informed the US and international mediators that the situation in Lebanon remains a key element of the negotiations. Tehran claims that Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon contradict the principles set out in the memorandum and framework agreement.

Meanwhile, just hours later, JD Vance also canceled a planned trip to Geneva. In a statement, the White House said the visit was postponed due to “unresolved logistical issues related to the next phase of negotiations.”
