Lawyer Indrit Sefa has commented on the case related to the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, stating that the legal process is expected to be long, but it is essential to guarantee a fair trial for all parties.

According to Sefa, the trial in the First Instance could be completed in 2027–2028, while court sessions could be held once a week, depending on the circumstances and the progress of the process.

He stressed that Veliaj has been charged with passive corruption in nine cases, as well as other additional charges. According to him, in the early stages of the investigation, Veliaj had the wrong approach, as it created suspicions that in the event of another security measure, he could destroy evidence or exert pressure on witnesses.

Sefa added that these are elements that are taken into account in the assessment of security measures, but stressed that detention cannot last indefinitely and every procedure has its legal deadlines. In this context, he said that after the start of the judicial process, there is a possibility that a lighter security measure will be imposed on Veliaj. "The Veliaj case will last, but it is important to have a fair trial for all parties. The trial in the first instance may end in 2027-2028. The hearings may be held once a week, but as is known. In the case of Mr. Veliaj, the charges brought against him are; passive corruption, in 9 cases, there are other charges. Mr. Veliaj had the wrong approach in the early stages. He showed that if there is another security measure, he could destroy evidence and threaten witnesses. The person being investigated will do these things even in a serious way. But everything has its own deadlines because you cannot stay in detention all the time. Once the court process has started, a lighter measure may be taken for Mr. Veliaj. Most likely yes," he said.
