One of the largest hornet nests ever discovered in Western New York has once again become the center of attention, as it is on display at the Buffalo Museum of Science. The nest, about 90 feet long, was found years ago in the attic of a house in the Angola neighborhood and is believed to have been active for several years, unlike typical nests that last only one season.

Experts explain that hornets build their nests using a mixture of saliva and wood fibers, creating a material similar to paper pulp. They usually build underground, in trees or in hidden spaces of buildings, which often makes them difficult to detect and treat. In certain cases, especially when it comes to hornets known as “yellow jackets”, nests can be created inside the walls or attics of houses, becoming a serious problem for residents. A colony can grow significantly during the summer, reaching up to thousands of individuals.

Specialists warn that these insects are among the most aggressive and can sting several times without dying, while multiple attacks can be life-threatening. For this reason, in similar cases, professional intervention is recommended rather than individual efforts to remove them.
