Early parliamentary elections in Serbia will be held on October 25, the country's President, Aleksandar Vučić, announced on Tuesday evening.
Vučić told Radio Television of Serbia that on Wednesday at noon he will sign decrees dissolving the Parliament and calling elections as a result.
He expressed hope that after the elections, the country will emerge from the crisis.
His announcement comes after the day before, the Government approved Prime Minister Gjuro Macu's proposal to send a letter to the President to dissolve the Assembly, which is necessary to declare early elections.
Early elections are being demanded by students who have been blocking faculties and leading protests against the government for months.
These protests have demanded responsibility for the deaths of 16 people in an incident at the Novi Sad Railway Station in November 2024.
Government representatives have repeatedly announced the announcement of elections, while Vučić himself has also stated that he will step down from the post of president before the end of his term in April 2027.
The previous parliamentary elections were held in December 2023.
They were accompanied by allegations from the opposition, non-governmental organizations, and international observers of serious irregularities, pressure on voters, misuse of public resources, and use of public functions for campaign purposes.
While the government claims that electoral conditions have improved since then in line with the recommendations of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), some local organizations assess that the main problems have not been resolved./ REL
