The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has made statements that have sparked numerous discussions regarding Minsk's stance on the war in Ukraine.
During a speech in Grodno, Lukashenko explained why he does not want Belarusian citizens to be directly involved in the conflict.
"The time will come when I will tell you how it all began! Why should we go and fight in Ukraine for someone else's will? Do we want to become minced meat there? No, we don't want that," he declared, hinting that he does not support sending Belarusian troops to the front.
However, just a few minutes later, the Belarusian leader was careful to emphasize that his country remains a close ally of Russia and is not moving away from its strategic partnership with Moscow.
Lukashenko also addressed neighboring countries, mentioning Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine.
"I want Poles, Lithuanians and Ukrainians to listen to me. We don't want to fight them. But we are always ready to protect you," he said.
The statement has sparked mixed interpretations, as it is unclear who the Belarusian president was trying to protect and from what threat. His comments come at a time when Belarus remains a key ally of Russia in the war against Ukraine, while trying to avoid direct military involvement in the conflict.
