Analyst Fatos Lubonja has harshly commented on the joint resolution voted by the majority and opposition on Albania's European integration, stating that the country continues to remain a "narco-state" and far from European Union standards.
Invited to the show "This Week", Lubonja stated that integration should not be seen only as a geopolitical issue, but as a process that should guarantee functional democracy, security and the rule of law for Albanian citizens.
"There are more important things than integration, like cleaning up the narco-state. I don't really care that Europe needs it for geopolitics. I care that we live in a safe and democratic state," he declared.
Lubonja also criticized the opposition, saying that it is acting with "double standards", as on the one hand it denounces the government for corruption and state capture, while on the other hand it joins the majority on resolutions related to European integration.
According to him, there is a "complex against Westerners" in Albanian politics, where every request from international partners is accepted without critical reflection.
The analyst also brought to attention the agreement on migrant camps, ironizing claims that Albania is moving towards European standards.
"Either Albania is a European standard and joins the EU in 2030, or it is used as a place to hold immigrants that Italy does not want," he said.
Lubonja also criticized the country's infrastructural and economic situation, saying that citizens continue to face water shortages and basic problems, while construction and concreting increase every year.
"Here there has been 30 years without water and concrete is being built like in New York. Why should we enter Europe with this situation?", declared the analyst.
