DP Chairman Sali Berisha commented today on the statement made by President Zelensky that Ukraine did not recognize Kosovo's independence, as it was unilateral.

Berisha expressed regret for the stance of the Ukrainian head of state and described the statement as "unacceptable".

"Today we have a statement in which we express regret for President Zelensky's statement in Belgrade on the independence of Kosovo, which he stated is unilateral. This statement by President Zelensky comes in open contradiction with the decisions of the North Atlantic Alliance, with the Ahtisaari plan approved by the United Nations."
It is in open contradiction with the decisions of the main member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.
It is in open contradiction with international law, as interpreted at the request of Belgrade by the International Court of Justice of the United Nations, which has expressed its support for the legitimacy of Kosovo's independence. But on the other hand, the declaration is also in another respect outside any historical context.

Albanians are a friendly nation to the Ukrainian nation and in Albania and Kosovo, they have fully expressed solidarity with the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian people under the leadership of President Zelensky against barbaric Russian aggression.

"While Serbia until recently was the Kremlin's Trojan Horse in the Balkans. It is small Russia, which undeniably served and continues to serve in a way as a powerful rearguard of Russia in the Balkans. Even in this context, President Zelensky's statement is out of any context, and I think, the interest of his country. Therefore, the Democratic Party considers it a completely inappropriate, completely unacceptable and I would say an unfortunate statement in a country that should never have been made and for the independence of Kosovo," he said.
