Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel supports Donald Trump's plans to block Iranian ports.

US Central Command said the blockade on ships entering and leaving ports would begin at 3pm UK time today.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting today, Netanyahu said Trump issued his threat because Iran "broke the rules" during marathon peace talks with the US, which broke down at the weekend.

"President Trump decided to impose a naval blockade on them. We certainly support this firm stance and are fully coordinated with the United States at all times," he said.

Netanyahu said JD Vance briefed him after marathon discussions in Pakistan failed to result in an agreement.

The US vice president called him from his plane after leaving Islamabad, he said, and "made it clear that the central issue is the removal of all enriched material and ensuring that there is no further enrichment."
