Olive growers in the villages of Mallakastra are raising concerns that large quantities of their olive oil have gone unsold. Although the Mallakastra olives are centuries old and their oil is of high quality, growers say that the lack of a market for selling the oil has faced economic difficulties.
Growers say that production is very abundant, so it is necessary to have collection points for olives in this area, asking the state to create a brand that could pave the way for exporting olives or the oil produced from them.
Olive growers in Mallakastër say that their costs are too high, starting from the initial care to the processing process in the factory, while they are often forced to sell their production below cost. Outraged, they say they will abandon olive cultivation, as they are losing money year after year.
