The increase in West Nile virus cases has caused concern in Skopje, where health authorities have so far confirmed 35 cases of infection and four deaths.

The epidemic is mainly affecting the capital region, while the majority of diagnosed patients are people over 60. Some of those infected have developed severe neuroinvasive forms of the disease, including encephalitis and meningitis.

Some patients are being treated at the University Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Skopje, while other cases have been admitted to intensive care units.

Due to the spread of the virus, authorities have declared a state of epidemic in several municipalities of Skopje, strengthening mosquito control measures and epidemiological surveillance.

The increase in cases has been rapid. At the end of July, only eight cases were registered, while within a few weeks the number has increased to 35. According to authorities, this year's outbreak is among the most serious in the country since the first cases of West Nile virus were registered in 2011.

Health authorities have called on citizens to take protective measures, using insect repellents, avoiding being outdoors during the evening hours, and eliminating standing water in yards, balconies, and other spaces where mosquitoes can breed.
