UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has appointed Dan Jarvis as the new Defence Secretary, following the sudden resignation of John Healy, who stepped down from the post amid concerns over the government’s low defence spending. Dan Jarvis, 52, is considered one of the Labour Party’s most experienced figures in the field of national security and defence. Before entering politics, he served as an officer in the British Parachute Regiment, taking part in missions in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland. He is a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and studied International Politics and Strategy.

Jarvis was first elected MP in 2011 for Barnsley in northern England, and later served as Mayor of South Yorkshire. Until his new appointment, he held a government role with responsibility for counter-terrorism, border security and national security. His appointment comes at a sensitive political moment for the British government, amid growing calls within the Labour Party for a term for Starmer to lead the party. In parallel with John Healy's resignation, the Armed Forces Secretary, Al Carnes, has also reportedly been removed from his post.

The two former officials had stressed that the current level of defense funding is insufficient for international challenges, at a time when the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East and warnings from military structures are increasing pressure to strengthen Britain's defense capabilities.
