An unusual object, resembling a portable speed camera, has begun to appear on several roads in Europe, causing confusion and even panic among drivers.
It is a small cylindrical device, usually placed on a tripod and surrounded by reflectors, whose appearance closely resembles the speed radars that road authorities use to identify violations.
However, the reality is quite different, the device has nothing to do with traffic control and is not used by traffic police.
In fact, it is an advanced security system called PID360, manufactured by the company DeterTech, which is mainly used in construction sites, wind farms, and other areas that require a high level of protection.
PID360 is equipped with high-resolution 360-degree panoramic cameras, motion sensors and an integrated light and sound warning system. Its purpose is to detect unauthorized entry, acts of vandalism or attempted theft, not traffic violations.
The visual similarity to speed cameras has caused many misunderstandings, with drivers braking immediately upon seeing the device on the side of the road, believing it to be a police check.
In some countries where this device is used, authorities have noticed that its presence has a positive effect on traffic, as many drivers automatically slow down their pace, an effect similar to the placement of fake cameras on European roads.
In terms of function, the PID360 system is automatically activated as soon as it detects movement, records the entire incident and, if necessary, immediately sends notifications, video and audio signals. The device connects via the mobile network, allowing real-time transmission of materials to police centers. More than 10.000 such devices are already in use in Germany, the United Kingdom and Ireland.
