Senator Rodrigo Paz has emerged victorious in the second round of Bolivia's presidential election, according to preliminary results published by the Supreme Electoral Court.

The result is out after 97.53% of the votes have been counted.

Paz, a member of the centrist Christian Democratic Party, secured 54.54% of the vote, defeating his rival, former President Jorge Quiroga, candidate of the right-wing Alliance "For Freedom and Democracy", who received 45.46%.

The President of the Electoral Court, Oscar Hassenteufel, stated that although the results are still preliminary, "the trend is now irreversible" and Paz's victory is expected to be officially confirmed in the coming days.
