A 71-year-old woman has filed a lawsuit against a 91-year-old doctor, accusing him of using his sperm to impregnate her son without her knowledge or consent during an artificial insemination procedure in 1982. Mary Ellen Lukezick had believed for more than four decades that her son had been conceived with the sperm of a donor, described at the time as a young and healthy medical student.

The truth allegedly came to light in December 2024, when Joseph Laedtka Heider, now 43, took a DNA ancestry test on Ancestry.com. The results revealed genetic ties to the family of Dr. Frederick Dettmann and, according to the lawsuit, indicated that he was Joseph's biological father.

The test also revealed nine other half-siblings, raising concerns that the case may not be isolated. According to the lawsuit, Lukezick was a patient of Dettmann in 1982 and, after having difficulty conceiving, the doctor recommended artificial insemination. The lawsuit was filed on August 6, and lawyers for the mother and son said that during the preparation of the case, other women who claim to have had disturbing experiences with the doctor, some of which date back to the 1970s, have come forward.

Dettmann, who is now retired, denies the allegations through his lawyers. The case has also brought to light a 1985 incident, when Dettmann was accused of assaulting a woman during a gynecological examination. No charges were filed at the time, as authorities considered the allegation difficult to prove. The investigation and trial are expected to shed more light on how the insemination procedure was carried out and whether there have been other similar cases.
