Democrat Ilir Alimehmeti in an interview for the show 'This Week' on News24, in front of journalist Nisida Tufa, commented on developments within the DP, regarding the debate on the race for chairman of this political force.

Alimehmeti once again reiterated his public stance that he had no ambition to run against Berisha for the presidency of the Democratic Party, while adding that he intended to run for mayor.

He claimed that if there had been another candidate, the race would have been more interesting.

"When there is only one candidate, it is a reconfirmation. There is no way it could be otherwise. A race would have been more interesting. Races for opposition leader are not subject to the electorate, but to the membership itself. It is the membership that decides, one member one vote, for the leader. It is not a perfect system, it has its shortcomings. But that is how it is decided by the statute. Then the electorate has its own right within a party to see the total and make its own decisions. There is also a different opinion in the membership. There could also be a vote to a different extent. But I had doubts that Berisha would not be confirmed as the leader of the DP. I think there are other figures. Whether we win or not, this is another matter. Who is at the leading levels, branch leaders, like we had Mr. Elezi. A winning platform would require a longer work. I do not see anyone offering a serious proposal in this total aspect. I understand the kindness, but the ambition of the person must also be understood "I do not have this ambition. I have another objective, I have shown it clearly for years. My objective has been directed towards Tirana. The ambition of the leader of the DP and tomorrow prime minister, is a different kind of issue, a competition, territorially broader. I think there are more advanced people," he said.

Focusing on the harsher stance of Salijanj and Berisha, Alimehmeti said that he does not support this form of reaction.

"The harsher tone is not positive. I cannot support this harsher tone. I don't think there would be a problem if he ran. I didn't see any problems. But the leadership would decide. Would there be a competition? I think there would be, but it doesn't meet those conditions. You shouldn't go into the competition just for one position, but with a team for all positions," Alimehmeti said. Alimehmeti also commented on the 'problems' in the DP as well as the confrontation with the 'Rama' government. He said that the political crisis in the country is resolved with a transitional government.
