Lawyer Refxhei Tola, who represents the 21-year-old who has denounced a doctor for sexual abuse, has stated that there are other denunciations against the surgeon that extend over a very long period of time, starting about 33 years ago.
In a statement to the media, she stated that the case is not isolated, but "a repeated case," emphasizing that other complaints have also been received, the most recent dating back about a year, all alleging the same pattern of behavior.
Tola questioned the lack of institutional measures, asking how a doctor with these claims could have remained in the system for years, providing services to patients in vulnerable conditions. She added that so far the legal defense has not yet received full information from the prosecution, despite official requests, while emphasizing that a team of three lawyers is assisting the victim and collecting evidence to present to the justice authorities. At the end of the statement, the lawyer called on women and girls to denounce similar cases, guaranteeing anonymity and legal support, while emphasizing the need for a stronger institutional response to cases of sexual abuse.
"Today I speak in the capacity of a woman and a mother. The reason why I asked to make this statement is because we have received several other complaints, which date back 33 years, while the last one was made 1 year ago, for the same cases of abuse that the doctor in question has committed against other girls and women. It is a repeated case. How was it possible for a doctor to integrate and stay for such a long time in the hospital system, providing services to different individuals, to girls and boys, under certain conditions? It is a very sensitive issue.
I appreciate the girl who denounced. The new justice system must react through this example, so that maniacs, abusers and pedophiles no longer step on the blood of our children. So far we have not received any information, not even that belonging to the defense lawyers. We are a team of 3 lawyers who are assisting the abused victim, but we are ready to assist all other denunciations that will come. I call on women to come and denounce. We guarantee you complete anonymity. In our Albania, this phenomenon occurs frequently and no specific punitive measures are taken, but such cases end up being treated only with house arrest.
These are accusations and complaints against this doctor that have come to our law firm. They are accusations that date back to events, the first one starting about 33 years ago, and the most recent one that came is a year ago. Of course, I have to remain anonymous. These complaints are being handled by our law firm before they go to the relevant justice structures.
We want to prove that this case is a repeated case and that this problem does not lie only with the doctor. We are dealing with a hospital structure that has not taken any steps to conduct an administrative investigation, even though there was every sufficient indication to no longer keep this doctor in that workplace, where he had the opportunity to exploit and use people in vulnerable conditions. Regarding the question Are there cases related to other doctors involved, the lawyer stated: I cannot answer for these elements, they are part of the investigation. Regarding the last case reported, she explained: The last case is a case of a young girl. It is, apparently, the doctor has almost the same work practice with all the girls who come to him. We are treating, collecting the necessary evidence to file it with the police and the prosecutor's office.
I have not been able to familiarize myself with the file, since today we were authorized by the power of attorney to be the girl's defense attorneys and after the request we made to the prosecutor's office, we have not yet received the information, even though it is an unprecedented situation for information not to be provided. However, we are directing all official requests in writing, by email, to send to the prosecutor's office, waiting to receive the necessary information before granting the doctor's security measure. We are working to make them present, because what we want to build in our effective defense is to make it clear that this is a repeated case, so it is not a case that happened once and that's it. So it is a repeated case and this is what we are working to do. "And that's why I'm here to once again appeal to all women and girls who have felt abused: It's time to speak up, because apparently it's our children's turn now, so it's no longer our turn to be abused, and this is fundamentally intolerable," the lawyer said.
