Former Minister of Justice Eduart Halimi stated that the majority's initiative for legal changes is an emergency to protect ministers, but he also emphasized that he also sees it as pressure on justice.
During the interview on the show "Oponencje", in News24, underlined that a judge who is wiretapped is a blackmailed judge and cannot deliver justice.
"A wiretapped judge is a blackmailed judge. And a judge who is blackmailed cannot deliver justice and this is one of the problems that must be solved. Article 242 does not prohibit the suspension of ministers if they are suspected of committing criminal offenses. What the government is trying to do is change it and create a protection for ministers so that if a criminal offense is suspected, they are not suspended from continuing their work. But this does not negate the fact that a prison sentence or house arrest can be requested. Throughout the Eastern European basin, whenever justice strikes the opposition in all countries, justice is very good. But the moment it approaches the government, then it intervenes, justice is crazy, there are hyenas. But that is all. This change is an emergency that aims to solve a problem and this package that has been proposed does not solve the problem that the government will solve. But it is an attempt to put pressure on justice", he said.
He also stated: "The constitution adopted in '98 was adopted in a completely different environment from the one we have today. Not only in Albania... The last one for immunity was done 14 years ago and the justice reform 10 years ago. But in 2016, what was done did not bring the expectations that citizens have requested. What is coming now in an emergency manner is not in the function of citizens, but only in its function. Every time the government makes laws that will protect itself, they are not good laws"
