"I was looking forward to playing for a while, as I arrived with an uncomfortable feeling. I'm happy, excited and enjoying every moment. I feel really good. I was looking forward to coming and taking away the fear that you have when you feel this discomfort. We have a week to prepare for the opening match.

Despite Argentina coming into this tournament as the reigning world champions, having won the trophy in Qatar four years ago, Messi ensured that the team led by Lionel Scaloni has not lost its hunger for victory and success.

"As always, when a competition starts, especially a World Cup, I am very excited. The team continues to show that it has the same desire and enthusiasm. We will continue step by step, but with enthusiasm, emotion and great confidence in what we are capable of doing,"
