A serious incident of violence was recorded in the early hours of Saturday, in the Emergency Department of the "Red Cross" Hospital, in Greece, where a patient physically attacked a nurse.
The incident occurred while the nurse, who usually works in the Intensive Care Unit, was transferred to the Emergency Room for that shift.
According to the complaint of POEDIN president Michalis Giannakou, the patient was on a stretcher in the clinic's premises, while doctors asked him to wait, as priority was given to patients in serious condition whose lives were at risk.
The request to be patient allegedly angered the patient, who then got up and attacked the nurse.
According to Giannakou, the patient grabbed the nurse's hair and pulled it out, punched her, and then slammed her head against the door.
"He stood up, targeting the nurse and tried to beat her badly. He grabbed her by the hair, which he pulled out, punched her and slammed her head against the door," Giannakou said.
The POEDIN president has also raised allegations about the way the security guards at the scene reacted.
According to him, two guards were present and, despite requests for intervention, did not help the nurse, citing rules prohibiting physical contact with patients.
"There were two guards right there who, despite being asked, did not help because physical contact with a patient is prohibited. The colleague was being beaten, she was in danger of being killed, and the guards were watching like spectators," Giannakou said.
