EU heads of state and government called on the European Commission (EC), Slovakia and Ukraine to intensify efforts towards "finding workable solutions to the gas transit issue", including by resuming at an extraordinary summit in Brussels.
Earlier, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he wanted to mention the reopening of Russian gas transit through Ukraine as part of the summit's conclusions, according to the agency.
The transit of Russian gas to Europe, including Slovakia, via Ukraine was completely cut off on January 1 due to Kiev's refusal to extend a relevant agreement. Later, Fico said that gas consultations among EU countries originally scheduled for January 7 had been canceled due to the absence of the Ukrainian delegation.
