BRUSSELS – European Union Foreign Ministers are expected to discuss in detail new measures against Georgia in January, due to the deterioration of democratic standards in the country.

The news was announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, during the presentation of the European Commission's annual reports on the progress of candidate countries.

Kallas stated that the Georgian government is on a collision course with the European Union, due to democratic regression and steps that, according to her, are being taken in the wrong direction.

"The Georgian government is on a collision course with the European Union. The steps that are being taken now are not going in the right direction," she stressed, Euronews reports.

According to Kallas, the discussion scheduled for January will provide an opportunity for EU member states to harmonize positions and determine a joint response to the actions of the authorities in Tbilisi.

Relations between Brussels and Tbilisi have deteriorated due to the European Union's concerns about democratic developments and respect for European standards in Georgia.
