The European Union is simultaneously preparing several options to formalize Ukraine's membership in the bloc, which is planned to be included in a future peace agreement.

Bloomberg reported this, citing sources.

"Among the options being considered are immediate protection for Kiev and immediate access to some of the rights granted to alliance members. At the same time, the bloc will provide Ukraine with clear deadlines for completing the necessary steps to implement the official procedure," the sources told the publication.

Other options include continuing the current process of Ukraine's accession to the EU, or creating a transition period, or organizing a gradual process of Kiev's membership in the union.

A European Commission spokesman told Bloomberg that Ukraine's accession to the EU is part of the peace deal negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war. The European Union is currently strengthening close ties with candidate countries on the verge of joining the bloc.

The publication recalled that Ukraine's draft 20-point peace plan envisions its membership in the EU in 2027, with Kiev receiving some of the benefits of membership in the interim period.

According to information published in December 2025, if a peace agreement is reached and the war ends, Ukraine will join the European Union by January 1, 2027.
