Greece will officially respond within the next few days to an invitation to participate in US President Donald Trump's planned Peace Council organization, the government said on Monday.
Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said Athens was still weighing its response in coordination with European Union partners, and particularly with Mediterranean neighbors Italy and Cyprus.
"Our country's final decision on whether or not to participate in the US president's initiative will be announced in the coming days," Marinakis said.
Trump's board was initially presented as a small group of leaders who would specifically oversee the Gaza ceasefire. Trump later invited dozens of countries to participate and suggested that the organization could begin to function as a broader conflict resolution body.
Trump's invitations have caught EU members in a state of disarray, with only Hungary and Bulgaria saying they would join. Greece is willing to maintain good relations with the US administration, given the balance of power with historic regional rival Turkey, but it would also be unwilling to damage relations with its EU partners over Trump's initiative.
The Peace Board is expected to hold its first session on February 19 in Washington.
