The European Union Ambassador to Albania, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, conveyed direct messages during the joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama, following the publication of the progress report for Albania.
Focusing on the protests being held in the country, where Rama's resignation is being demanded, she said that they were initially driven by environmental issues, but were later accompanied by broader demands, such as the fight against corruption and improved governance.
"It was environmental issues that sparked the protests, which were accompanied by broader movements, the fight against corruption, better governance. Peaceful protests are part of democratic life, but in this democratic life there is no place for violence. Any violent reaction must remain proportional. But I repeat, violence has no place in the democratic life of the country. Discontents must be resolved through dialogue. It is up to the institutions to create the conditions for the development of democratic dialogue. Yesterday Albania received the progress report, where it did not receive new conditions," she said.
Regarding the progress report, the ambassador announced that Albania has not received new conditions at this stage of the European integration process.
