The Meloni government presented the legislative decree which tightens a series of measures for public safety.

More specifically, the Italian government approved the so-called "preventive ban": it will last up to 12 hours, with the aim of prohibiting participation in demonstrations for citizens who have been convicted of violent incidents or in whose possession weapons, batons or helmets have been found.

Preventive detention will be imposed by the police forces, but the prosecutor must be informed immediately, who will also have the right – if he considers that the established conditions do not exist – to order the immediate release of the detained person.

The judicial authority will be able to prohibit participation in demonstrations by citizens who have been convicted of criminal offenses committed during marches and mobilizations, as well as those convicted of terrorism, causing destruction, damage, bodily harm, threats and violence against public officials, murder and other criminal offenses.

At the same time, for police forces, but also for all citizens, with these new measures, it is foreseen that in case there is substantial evidence that someone has protected themselves from an attack, being in "legal protection", a prosecutorial investigation against them should not be initiated automatically (as was the case until now).

The same package of measures also includes a ban on the sale of knives and pocket knives to minors, with retailers required to ask for police identification from young people entering their stores. The same ban also applies to the internet, with checks by the competent state authorities. At the same time, adults who carry knives with blades exceeding eight centimeters will face prison sentences of up to three years.

"These are not isolated measures, but another part of the strategy that our government has implemented since its foundation," Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote online.

"The preventive ban, as emphasized in many interventions, is not a libertarian measure. On the contrary, it is contained in almost all European legislation," said Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piandendozi.

Recently, a statement by the Italian Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, caused a sensation, who, referring to the Red Brigades, emphasized that "with the activity of prevention and repression, the government is trying to avoid the return of those sad moments."
