US President Donald Trump said it could take about a week for Washington and Tehran to reach an agreement on a memorandum of understanding that would lead to a permanent end to the war between the two countries. According to Fox News, Trump made the comment during a telephone interview with the network, appearing cautiously optimistic about the progress of the talks.
Asked what the timeline might be for reaching an agreement between Iran and the United States on the memorandum of understanding currently in development, the US president replied laconically: "A week."
The American television network noted that Trump seemed "modestly optimistic" during the communication.
Timelines vary.
At the same time, it is noted that the American president has occasionally given different timelines regarding negotiations with Iran, in his frequent telephone statements to journalists.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, the US president said it was "very likely" to reach an agreement with Iran after "very good talks" between Washington and Tehran in the last 24 hours.
"We had very good talks in the last 24 hours and it is very likely that we will reach an agreement," the US president said specifically.
Earlier, Axios reported that the US side expects an official response from Tehran on the memorandum of understanding within the next 48 hours.
However, it remains unclear whether Trump's reference to a one-week deadline means that, even after the expected Iranian response, additional days of negotiations will be required to finalize the deal.
