On July 15, 1997, the global fashion industry was shocked by the tragic murder of Gianni Versace. The 50-year-old designer, one of the most iconic creators of his time, was murdered outside his luxury Miami home when serial killer Andrew Cunanan shot him in cold blood.
The shock was great, not only for the fashion world, but also for his family, who were dealing with the loss of the man who had built the Versace empire. Gianni's 27-year-old killer had already committed four murders before executing the designer. His motive for killing Versace remains unknown, as no note or other evidence was found to explain his act. After shooting the Italian designer to death, Cunanan escaped and went into hiding for eight days. On July 23, 1997, he was found dead on a houseboat in Miami, having committed suicide with the same gun he used in the horrific murders.

After the tragic loss, Donatella Versace was forced to take the reins of the fashion house, despite the heavy mourning. Until then, she had been her brother's muse and right-hand woman, responsible for the Versus line. Her position as creative director was not a choice she had prepared herself for, but something imposed by circumstances. "The loss of Gianni was incalculable. He was the undisputed leader, the creative genius of the house. "The weight that fell on my shoulders was enormous," she said at the time.
Less than six months after his death, Donatella presented her first collection as artistic director at Milan Fashion Week. Her anguish was palpable. “I wanted to leave thinking I had to come out here without him,” she said with emotion. However, the reception of the collection was positive. “The collection was fantastic. “It had everything from Gianni and so much from her,” actress Demi Moore enthusiastically commented at the time.
Despite the difficulties, Donatella managed to keep the Versace house at the forefront of world fashion. Over the years, she evolved the style of the house, adding her own touch, while respecting the aesthetic of her brother. “There were two opposing worlds in Italian fashion in the 90s: Armani and Versace. And Donatella had to keep Gianni's vision alive. “It was incredibly difficult,” said the designer's friend, Hal Rubenstein.
In 2018, the Versace family made a big decision: The majority of the house was sold to the American group Capri Holdings for 1.83 billion euros. euros. Although Donatella remained as artistic director, this move marked the beginning of a new era.
Now, after 27 years at the helm, Donatella has decided to step down. On March 13, 2025, the Versace house announced that Dario Vitale would be the new artistic director, the first not from the Versace family.
However, Donatella is not leaving completely, as she will take on the role of brand ambassador. “Empowering the new generation of designers has always been important to me. I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will join our team and I can’t wait to see Versace with new eyes. I want to thank the incredible team of designers and all the Versace collaborators with whom I have had the honor of working for more than three decades. It has been the greatest honor of my life to continue the legacy of my brother Gianni. He was a true genius, but I hope to have a little of his spirit and will. In my new role as the brand’s chief ambassador, I will remain the most passionate fan of Versace. “Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.”
Dario Vitale, 41, is considered one of Milan’s most innovative designers. He has worked at major houses such as Dsquared2, Bottega Veneta and Miu Miu, where he rose to the position of design director. As he stated about the great position he is now taking: “It is a great honor for me to join Versace as creative director and to be part of this unique and powerful luxury house created by Gianni and Donatella. The House of Versace has a unique heritage that spans decades and has shaped the history of fashion. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Donatella and the trust she had in me and for her tireless dedication to the extraordinary brand that Versace is today. It is a privilege to contribute to the development of Versace’s future and its global impact through my vision, experience and dedication.”
Donatella's departure from the house marks the end of an era for Versace. With ongoing rumors of a possible sale of the brand, but also the uncertainty that any major change brings, it remains to be seen whether Dario Vitale will manage to maintain the house's brilliance or whether Versace will follow an entirely new path in the fashion world.
