Reports of Russian drones entering Romanian airspace on Friday have raised fresh concerns about security on NATO's eastern flank, at a time of high tensions in the region.

Analyst Misha Pumo, in a direct link to "News24 "Weekend" has suggested that the incident may not have been a deliberate attack, but the result of a technical deviation of the drone, caused by interference in its navigation systems. According to him, the drone may have been disoriented by electromagnetic and anti-aircraft interference in the area, losing its initial target.

"There is evidence that the drone may have lost control due to the disorientation of Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems. But both Putin and the Russian Foreign Ministry have rejected the version that Moscow deliberately hit Romania. Putin himself has said that there is no evidence that it was sent from Russia.

"I think everything happened due to a technical deviation of the drone that was disconnected from its original purpose under the influence of electromagnetic waves. Especially since the target was not a strategic objective that would be worth the 'trouble' caused," he said.
