The leader of the "Albania Becomes" Movement, Adriatik Lapaj, has revealed details of his police escort during the protest held on Tuesday in front of the Parliament, after he intervened as journalist Shpend Gashi was being forcibly tackled.
Lapaj stated on the show "Minuta e Parë" on News24, with journalist Ola Bruko that about 20 civilians had surrounded him, while he made accusations about the scheme that, according to him, is being pursued by the government.
"We have changed our minds, not just me. They can accompany us, arrest us every day, the trouble is to be arrested for stealing medicine money, that's a shame. But to be arrested for protesting against thieves, that's a decoration. They will keep us for up to 72 hours, no problem. Reacting against thefts is glory.
It was a normal protest situation. We were obstructing a car belonging to a deputy, who obstructed the arrest of Belinda Balluku. We were obstructing the work of deputies. Which deputies? Those who protect thieves of public money. I think it's even late. We were all there that day. Journalist Shpendi went to help a woman who was being pushed. Someone grabbed Mr. Gashi by the neck, because they grabbed him by the throat. This is not something that the law provides for. Watch the footage.
Mr. Gashi was not putting up any resistance. I intervened and found myself surrounded by civilian police. Look at the footage. What do they want civilians for?! It's not to make arrests by civilians. Because there are uniformed officers there.
I see the state coming at me. If I were to be caught by a 25-year-old man wearing a Dolce & Gabbana shirt. And your salary is 800 thousand lek, where did you find the money?! I could have punched him. Who is this person who comes as a civilian? It's not like 20 civil servants come and drag a journalist, a teacher or an ordinary citizen.
I'm not talking about ordinary police officers. We're talking about those who are infiltrators of crime in the higher police structures. The treatment afterwards was very correct. There was no argument for association. With so many years, I have never violated the law. I know it well and the limits of the law. My intervention was within the law, to protect some citizens from some civilians who were dragging him away. We left as soon as we went because it was accepted that it was wrong. All those who are in the square are equal. They are boys and girls who have been arrested in 103 days. I go to the protest as a citizen. I think it's the best thing everyone can do, to add fuel to that flame of freedom. In Albania, a culture of protest is being installed in the face of thieves. The majority of protesters are homogeneous, united," he said.
