At least 25 people were killed and 14 others were seriously injured when a bus overturned for unknown reasons in the Amhara province of northern Ethiopia, according to a government-affiliated Fana broadcasting corporation.

The accident occurred in the Northern Wall area. Police told FBC that the bus traveling from Kurba to the town of Desi overturned, without providing further details.

Road accidents are common in Ethiopia, a country of 120 million people where roads are poorly maintained. In late December, more than 70 people were killed when a truck carrying workers plunged into a river. The tragedy was the worst to hit the country since at least 2000.

Africa is home to just 4% of the world's car fleet, but in 2023 19% of road traffic deaths were recorded on the continent, according to the latest data from the World Health Organization. Unlike other regions of the world where there is a decline, the number of road traffic fatalities on African roads increased by 17% between 2010-21.
