The US State Department has launched an investigation after discovering an artificial intelligence scam that involved impersonating Senator Marco Rubio's voice.
An unknown individual used a fake account on the Signal app to contact foreign ministers and other senior officials. The AI-generated voice was used to send voice messages, posing as Rubio.
The incident was revealed in a July 3 cable, which was distributed to all US diplomatic posts. The fraudulent account was created in mid-June under the name “[email protected]". At least five people were contacted, including a US governor and a member of Congress.
Although the scams were unsuccessful, the State Department emphasizes the need to strengthen cybersecurity. Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrator of this disinformation campaign. The goal is suspected to have been manipulation to obtain confidential information. Rubio has not yet commented on the case.
