A 33-year-old Iranian blogger has been sentenced to death by a revolutionary court in Bandar Abbas after being accused of "corruption on earth," insulting Iran's supreme leader, and activities against national security.
Marzieh “Sevda” Ebrahimi Shamsabadi, who has been in prison since her arrest earlier this year, was sentenced by the Third Branch of the Revolutionary Court in Bandar Abbas. According to data published by the human rights organization HRANA and reports by Iran International, she has been charged with several charges, including communication and propaganda against national security, as well as alleged collaboration with a “hostile government.” Before her arrest, Ebrahimi Shamsabadi had published a message on Instagram that would turn out to be her last post. Against a black background, accompanied by the image of a white dove and a red rose, she wrote: “If one day I leave this world, know only one thing – I chose the path I believed in.”
The blogger, who had around 10 followers on Instagram, was allegedly arrested in March. She was reportedly held in solitary confinement for around 20 days and subjected to pressure during interrogation. One of the charges relates to a photograph she allegedly took from afar in an area hit by a missile. Iranian authorities claim she sent the photograph to a Persian-language media outlet based outside Iran. In addition to the death sentence, the court also sentenced her to several years in prison, ordered the confiscation of her assets and banned her from holding certain state and public services. Ebrahimi Shamsabadi’s lawyer was informed of the death sentence on 23 August.
According to reports, she was born in Arak, raised in Tehran and later settled in Bandar Abbas. She was also reported to have suffered from multiple sclerosis for about six years. A source familiar with her health condition told HRANA that her condition had worsened during her time in prison, raising concerns about her physical condition and the treatment she received while in detention.
