The integration of the Roma and Egyptian communities into society has been an ongoing challenge for Albanian state institutions.

With the launch of the draft law on equality for public consultation by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the Specialist of the Regional Office for Protection from Discrimination in Korça, Etleva Tare, says that the biggest problems for the Roma and Egyptian communities are mostly encountered in terms of employment, due to the low level of education and discrimination.

Housing also remains a major challenge for these communities in Korça, where around 200 families living in former dormitories face difficult living conditions. Another problem remains the implementation of the rent bonus, as families often face rejection by landlords due to their ethnicity.

In the framework of the draft decision “On the approval of the action plan for equality, inclusion and participation of Roma and Egyptians”, Tare emphasizes that the draft action plan has arrived for consultation several months ago, but she emphasizes that the implementation of these policies remains difficult and institutional interaction is required. According to data, about 5% of the residents of the Municipality of Korça belong to the Roma and Egyptian communities.
