Authorities in Greece arrested 313 people today in a raid on a university campus in the country's second-largest city, Thessaloniki, after riot police were attacked by a crowd of people who threw more than 100 Molotov cocktails, according to the AP.

Greek police said groups of hooded men emerged from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki campus in the early hours of today to attack a riot police squad.

The unit is usually placed at a certain distance from the campus to ensure safety – after night parties that take place on university premises.

Such attacks against Riot Police near university campuses are not uncommon, but this is the first time that so many people have been arrested after such a clash – during which an unusually high number of firebombs were used.

Riot police used tear gas and stun grenades to repel the attackers.

"An officer was taken to a military hospital for burns to his face and leg, while a 21-year-old civilian was treated for breathing problems," police said.

The university said in a statement that the attacks were carried out by "extremists" off campus, in collaboration with several individuals within the university's grounds.

They said an investigation was underway – to determine if any students participated.

Also, according to the statement, no permission was given to organize any celebration on the university's territory.
