The US Federal Election Commission (FEC) website has been targeted by hackers, causing the agency's online registration system to go down, just a week before the November 3 election.

According to an email obtained by Reuters, the outage has affected the commission's online registration system, while technical staff are working to restore the service.

In an official statement, the FEC confirmed that the online registration system is currently down.

"IT staff is working diligently to restore service," the agency said in a statement.

The Federal Election Commission, which oversees the spending of candidates and political committees, announced that users can continue to search for previous reports and documents through the website.

The agency declined to comment further on the incident. No further details have been released about the nature of the suspected attack or its perpetrators.
